Turquoise

The turquoise is a symbol of the blue of the sea and the sky. Infinity in the ocean speaks of the depth of the soul. Infinity in the sky speaks of the limitless heights of ascension. T6he stone is opaque as the earth, yet it lifts the spirit high, giving us wisdom of both earth and sky, It is old, yet young.

The turquoise has been held as a most sacred stone by ancient and contemporary cultures who are mystically and spiritually inclined. The symbolism of its color has led to the belief that we are of the spirit. It was sacred in Egypt along with malachite and lapis lazuli. It was sacred to the Persian culture, where it symbolized purity. It is highly respected by Tibetan Buddhists and the American Indian, for they believe that it holds the atmosphere surrounding the earth and sky, giving life and breath. American Indians believe it to be a protector and guardian of the body and soul. Both cultures combine it with coral for polarity 9earth-red, and spirit-blue). The stone was worn in the navel by gypsies, who feel it is good for everything. The combination is shown in Plate 1 on page 87.

In Tibet there is a bridge called the turquoise bridge. Prayer wheels and charm boxes are usually decorated with turquoise because it is believed to bring good fortune. The stone is mounted on rings and worn in the hair. Tibetan women used to wear large hairpieces covered with turquoise stones, to display their hair to maximum advantage.

The turquoise has the capacity to absorb negative feelings that would have come to its wearer. Its color changes when the wearer is ill, or when something unpleasant is about to happen. Sometimes it cracks in the service of protection and sacrifice. The stone carries a strong healig vibration, which is magnified by its high copper content.
